Packaging and Accessories Sourcing in China
What to confirm when sourcing packaging, labels and accessories in China, from artwork and materials to fit, pack-out and carton configuration.
What to establish early
Packaging and accessories are often the final details that determine whether a product is ready to sell. Artwork files, material specifications, measurements, finish and packing configuration should be confirmed before production so they do not become a last-minute bottleneck.
- Artwork, colour references and print approval
- Material, finish and dimensional tolerances
- Pack-out, labelling and carton configuration
Treat artwork and specifications as production inputs
Packaging, labels and accessories should be specified with the same care as the main product. Provide the latest artwork, die-line or reference sample, material, finish, dimensions, colour reference and quantity so a supplier can identify missing information before production starts.
Version control matters. Make it clear which artwork file is approved, which languages or warnings apply and whether there are separate versions for different markets or product variants.
Confirm the parts that affect fit and presentation
A small packaging or accessory component can create a large delay when its dimensions, adhesive, print placement, hole position, finish or packing configuration are not confirmed. Sample reviews should check how the component works with the finished product, not just how it looks on its own.
For printed items, ask for a production sample or proof path that reflects the final materials and finish as closely as practical. This helps catch colour, copy or layout issues before the larger run is underway.
Plan pack-out with the supply chain in mind
Retail packaging, inner packs, labels and master cartons should work together. Confirm quantities per pack, barcode or mark placement, carton dimensions and the handling information required by the buyer or freight partner.
Packaging decisions can change product cost, shipping volume and damage risk. Keeping them visible during the sourcing process avoids treating them as an afterthought once the main goods are complete.
Questions buyers often ask
- What files are useful for a packaging enquiry?
- Send the final or latest artwork, dimensions or die-line, material and finish preferences, target quantity, product reference and any barcode, language or carton requirements.
- Can packaging be sourced separately from the product?
- Yes. The key is to align measurements, timing and pack-out requirements with the product supplier so the parts arrive and fit as intended.
Decide how much sourcing support you need
Some buyers need a supplier search; others already have a factory and need help keeping samples, production questions, quality priorities and handover organised. Read how to verify Chinese suppliers before you order, use the sample approval checklist for China sourcing, and compare China sourcing agents versus buying direct from factories before choosing the next step.
For this category, the most relevant support paths are product development in China, supplier sourcing in China and production follow-up in China.
